Feline idiopathic cystitis, which accounts for more than 50% of cases of FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and is a consequence of alterations in the urothelium and its functional properties of semi-permeability. These changes induce inflammation in the submucosa (C fibers) with CNS stimulation and involvement of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
The urothelium is naturally covered by a layer of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) that protects against bacterial adhesion and acts as a barrier against contact with harmful substances present in the urine. The loss of the integrity of the GAGs and thus of the protective layer is at the origin of the contact between the sensitive nerve fibers and the harmful constituents in the urine.
Glucosamine contributes to the organic synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, thus it is extremely useful for maintaining the integrity of the urothelium.

2. CRANBERRY EXTRACT (Vaccinium Macrocarpon) – BACTERIAL ADHESION
Proanthocyanidins (mainly PAC type A) found in cranberry pulp are a group of flavonoids capable of inhibiting the adhesion capacity of pathogenic bacteria with fimbriae* to the uroepithelium (e.g. Escherichia coli). PAC alters the shape of the fimbriae* thus reducing the binding strength to epithelial receptors.

3. MELOFEED & GREEN TEA CATECHINS - INFLAMMATION AND OXIDATIVE STRESS
Inflammation and oxidative damage are also present in lower urinary tract dysfunctions, especially in oxalate calculi and interstitial/idiopathic cystitis.
Melofeed® is an ultra-purified lyophilized extract from the pulp of a certain type of melon rich in antioxidants (SOD). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a family of antioxidant metalloenzymes involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It converts superoxide radicals into water and hydrogen peroxide, which is then catalyzed into O2 and H2O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase and thus reduces oxidative stress.
Green tea catechins (polyphenols) have a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect.
