Indications:

Helant contains the active substance omeprazole. It belongs to a class of medicines called “proton pump inhibitors”. They work by reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes.
This medicine is used in adults for the short-term treatment of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (e.g. heartburn, acid regurgitation).
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is the reflux of acid from the stomach into the oesophagus (the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), which can become inflamed and painful. This can cause symptoms such as a painful burning sensation in your chest that rises up into your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in your mouth (acid regurgitation).
You may need to take the capsules for 2 to 3 consecutive days to get relief from your symptoms.

Contraindications:
Do not take Helant:
• if you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Helant.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Omeprazole is excreted in breast milk but is unlikely to have any effect on the infant when given at therapeutic doses. If you are breast-feeding, your doctor will decide whether you can take Helant.

Driving and using machines:
Helant is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. Side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances may occur (see section 4). You should not drive or use machines if you experience these side effects.
Helant contains sodium:
This medicine contains 225 mg sodium (the main component of table salt) in each capsule.
This is equivalent to 11.2% of the recommended maximum daily intake of 2g sodium for an adult.

How to take:

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is one capsule (20 mg) once a day for up to 14 days. Contact your doctor if your symptoms have not gone away after this period.
You may need to take the capsules for 2 to 3 consecutive days to get relief from your symptoms. Most patients get complete relief from their heartburn within 7 days.
Once you no longer have symptoms, you should stop taking Helant.
How to take this medicine
• Take the capsule on an empty stomach, at the same time each day. An empty stomach means at least 30 minutes before a meal and at least 2 hours after the last meal (for example, in the morning before breakfast). This medicine contains the excipient sodium hydrogen carbonate which protects the active substance omeprazole from being broken down by stomach acid. If the medicine is taken with food, the protective effect of sodium hydrogen carbonate is reduced and the medicine may not have its full effect.
• Swallow the capsule whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or open the capsules as this may prevent them from working properly.
