Indications:
Escapelle is an emergency contraceptive that can be used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex or if your current contraceptive method fails.
Escapelle contains a synthetic hormone-like active ingredient called levonorgestrel.
It prevents pregnancy in 99% of cases if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It will not prevent pregnancy every time and is more effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex. It is better to take it within 12 hours than to wait until the third day.
Escapelle is thought to work by:
- stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg;
- stopping sperm from fertilising the egg that has already been released.
Escapelle can only prevent you from getting pregnant if it is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
It has no effect if you are already pregnant.
If you have unprotected sex after taking Escapelle, it does not prevent you from becoming pregnant.
Contraindications:
Do not take Escapelle:
- if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Escapelle.
This medicine is not recommended for use in children. If you are under 16 years of age you should contact your doctor or a family planning clinic to receive emergency contraception.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy:
You should not take this medicine if you are already pregnant.
If you become pregnant even after taking this medicine, it is very important to contact your doctor. There is no evidence that Escapelle will harm the baby developing in your womb if you use Escapelle as prescribed. However, your doctor may want to check whether the pregnancy is ectopic (where the baby is developing somewhere outside the womb). This is especially important if you have severe abdominal pain after taking Escapelle or if you have previously had an ectopic pregnancy, surgery on your fallopian tubes or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Breastfeeding:
Very small amounts of the active substance in this medicine may appear in breast milk. These amounts are not thought to be harmful to the baby, but to be on the safe side, you can take the tablet immediately after breast-feeding and then avoid breast-feeding for at least 8 hours after taking the tablet. This way, you take the tablet well before your next meal and reduce the amount of active substance that your baby could take in from your breast milk.
Fertility:
Escapelle increases the possibility of menstrual cycle disorders, which can sometimes cause ovulation to occur earlier or later. These changes may alter the fertile period; however, there are no long-term data on fertility.
Driving and using machines:
No studies have been performed on the effects on the ability to drive or use machines.
Method of administration:
Take the tablet as soon as possible, preferably within the first 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Do not delay taking the tablet. The sooner you take the tablet after unprotected sex, the better it works. The tablet only helps you not to get pregnant if you take it within 72 hours after unprotected sex.
Escapelle can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle, assuming you are not already pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Do not chew the tablet, but swallow it whole with water.

- The active substance is levonorgestrel. Each tablet contains levonorgestrel 1.5 mg.
